Warning message: Principal residence

You’ll see the following warning message on the ERRORS page in H&R Block’s 2017 tax software if, on the Special situations page, you indicated that you sold your principal residence in 2017, but you didn’t enter all of the required information related to this sale on the Principal residence designation page:

Since you noted on the Special situations page that you sold your principal residence in 2017, you need to report this sale on your return. To do this, you’ll need to enter some information (the address of the property, the date you acquired it, your proceeds from the sale, etc.) on the Principal residence designation page. [warning]

How do I fix this?

To clear this warning, return to the Principal residence designation page in H&R Block’s tax software and enter the required information relating to the sale of your home, including:

  • The address of the residence you sold
  • The date you acquired (bought) the residence
  • The amount you received from the sale of the residence

Note: You can find the Principal residence designation page under the OTHER icon of the PREPARE tab.
