You will see the following error message in H&R Block’s 2017 tax software if you indicated that your business or partnership hired apprentices but did not enter the amount of eligible expenditures you paid in 2017 for an apprentice:
To claim the Ontario apprenticeship training tax credit, you need to enter the expenses you paid in {taxyear} for each eligible apprentice your business or partnership hired. [error code: 185]
How do I fix this?
To correct the error, enter the amount of eligible expenditures paid in 2017 for an apprentice who started an apprenticeship program on or before April 23, 2015 and/or after April 23, 2015, but before November 15, 2017.
To do so, make sure you indicated that you have income from self-employment on the IN THIS SECTION page of the PREPARE tab. Next, select Ontario tax credits for self-employed individuals on the Employment and self-employment credits and expenses page under the EMPLOYMENT icon of the PREPARE tab.
On the Ontario tax credits for self-employed individuals page, enter the amount of expenses you paid in the year for the apprentice(s) your business or partnership hired.
